FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT METHOD:

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a hair transplant technique, involves the removal (extraction of follicular units) from another area of the body (usually at the back of your head) and implantation of them in an area of the head or face.

This is the most advanced method for extracting and implanting hair. The most natural-looking results are achieved by using innovative extraction technology. Hair transplant FUE is minimally invasive, causes minimal scarring, and takes less time.

WHAT IS THE FUE METHOD?

FUE works by removing your natural hair from the back (or anywhere else if necessary) and transplanting them to the area of your scalp that is balding.

The surgeon will use local anaesthesia to anesthetise your back so that you don’t feel pain. The team of surgeons will then remove any remaining hair from the back. It usually takes between two and three hours. The hair is removed using specialised, fine instruments that are usually less than 1mm in size. The surgeon will then take a break for lunch (usually between 40 minutes and an hour), before moving on to the next stage. The surgeon will make precise incisions at the desired angles and depths to the scalp, eyebrow, or beard. The surgeon will then insert or place the extracted hair follicles into the incisions. It takes great surgical skill and technique to place the hair grafts or extracted hairs in the scalp at the right angles and depths. Magnification is often used by the surgeon and his hair transplant team to aid in the implantation. This allows the hair grafts to grow naturally and look like existing hair.

FUE hair transplant surgery requires careful coordination. The surgeon is assisted by highly skilled and experienced hair transplant technicians at every stage. The British Hair Clinic FUE procedure takes approximately 7-8 hours from start to finish.

After the FUE surgery is completed successfully, the surgeon will give you clear instructions for post-operative care. These instructions include how to heal the wounds, medications and anti-biotic use as well as sleeping positions, washing instructions and exercise advice.

FAQs

Q What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

FUE follicles with 1-4 hairs are taken from the donor site individually (usually at the back or sides of the head) and then artfully transplanted to the balding or thinning areas. Individual extraction of donor hairs is safer than traditional strip-surgery.

Q Is it going to hurt?

Most patients feel comfortable during and after the Follicular Unit Extract-method hair transplant procedure. Patients may feel some discomfort or pain when the local anaesthetic is administered. The patient should feel no pain once the medicine has started to work. The recovery time is much quicker than with strip-surgery and post-operative pain is usually less. The surgeon will prescribe pain medications that can be used at home.

Q Will I have scars?

It is important to hide scarring after a hair transplant. FUE hair transplants can only be detected by a skilled surgeon. However, the donor site will be covered by your existing hair and may have small scarring or areas of hair loss. Because of the variability in healing and scarring, patients should not shave the back of their heads.

Q Will I need time off work after my surgery?

It depends on the type of work you do. You can return to work if you do not have a physically strenuous or physical job within a few days. Otherwise, you will need to wait 7 days. Another consideration is cosmetic. It is best to wait a few weeks before you return to work if you don't have enough hair or are concerned about others knowing. A modified cap, or a cap that is not too tight fitting, may be an option. Although the sun won't damage your grafts but your scalp might still be numb, you will need to protect your scalp from sunburn.
