FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) is a popular hair transplant treatment option for men. A group of healthy hair follicles are removed from the back of the skull and relocated to the area that is thinning. The procedure can involve as many as 3000 grafts. This allows for faster healing and less scarring.

The surgeon will talk with you about your expectations, discuss the results and draw the new hair layout. He or she will also explain the process to you.

First, clean and shave the area known as the donor. This is located at the back of your head starting from the top of your earline going downwards. The surgeon will administer local anesthesia to the patient and then remove individual hair grafts using a specialised machine that extracts hair from follicles. This machine can be used for a range of 0.85mm up to 1.15mm punches. The donor area will be covered with a sterile dressing to allow the tiny holes to heal. The dressing should be kept on for at least 24 hours.

Each graft after harvesting is inspected and classified according to the number of individual hairs. These grafts are then placed in the designated recipient area. The extraction phase can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on the number of grafts required.

The surgeon will make small incisions with a needle to access the desired area and align each graft. The surgeon will make the incisions according to the patient’s hair arrangement. This ensures that the final result is natural. Other factors such as the consistency or angle of the hair will be considered by the surgeon. This phase can take anywhere from one to four hours depending on how many grafts are needed.
