Follicular Unit Excision is a procedure that extracts or “harvests” donor hair during a follicular-unit hair transplant procedure. FUE hair transplant surgery uses an instrument to make a small circular incision around the follicular units, separating them from surrounding tissue. The unit is removed (pulled) from the scalp leaving an open area.

The process continues until enough follicular units are harvested for the intended hair restoration. This can take up to an hour and, in larger sessions, it may take two days. In seven to ten days, the donor wounds of approximately 1 mm in diameter will completely heal. There will be tiny white scarring in the hair at the back and sides.

This donor harvesting method, which removes follicular unit one-by-one from the scalp, is what distinguishes FUE from traditional Follicular Unit Transplants (FUT). In FUT, the donor hair is cut in one long, thin strip from the scalp and then dissected using a stereomicroscope into individual follicular cells.

The grafts will be harvested before the recipient sites are created. This is done by using a fine needlepoint tool. The recipient sites are where the follicular units will be placed. Both FUE and FUT are basically the same. The differences lie in the appearance of donor areas and the quality and number of grafts that are obtained with each technique.

Steps to FUE Method

1. Preparation for hair transplant
The initial step in Hair Transplant Surgery is to remove hair follicles at the back of your head and move them to the areas that are bald.

2. Trimming of the donor area
The donor area must be trimmed before the surgery can begin.

After the donor area hair is trimmed, it is administered local anesthesia.

After the local anesthesia has been administered to the patient, the recipient area that is balding is ready for surgery. No trimming or removal of hair is necessary at the top.

8. Incisions in the balding regions
Follicular Unit Grafts can be placed through tiny incisions made in the recipient’s area in an irregular pattern.

9. Grafts are placed according to their densities
The smallest grafts, one and two, are placed in front of your hairline. Three and four (denser that one and two) will be placed behind.

10. After the Hair Transplant Surgery
The patient’s operated area will show tiny incisions made with very short hair after the hair transplant surgery.

11. Closing the Hair Transplant Surgery
Within a week, the incision marks will heal naturally. The redness in the recipient’s area disappears.

1) Transplanted hair behaves just like natural hair. It sheds in between two and four weeks. The roots then start to sprout hair naturally and will continue to do this for a lifetime.
2) Local anesthesia is painless and allows the patient to go home that same day.

3) A hair transplant is different than non-surgical hair loss.

4) A hair transplant doesn’t guarantee you will get a full crop of hair. The result can vary from person to person.
