FUE – Follicle Unit Extraction Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction, also known as FUE, has been in use for more than 18 years. This hair restoration transplant procedure can be used by both men and women suffering from hair loss.
The motorised punch of 0.7mm/0.8mm extracts the follicles from the donor area. This makes it minimally invasive. The follicles will be extracted from the donor area one at a time.

The donor area heals in 3-4 days. It is difficult for the naked eye, however, to see the sites of the extractions.

FAQs

Q What is a graft?

A Graft can be described as a collection of hairs. Hair doesn't grow in single hair groups. Instead, most hair will grow in groups of 1,2,3,4, or 6 hairs per Graft.

Q How long does it take the new hair to grow?

Waiting for your hair to grow can seem like an eternity to a patient who has just had a hair transplant. For those who have been there before, it is exciting to see the new "look." Patients will begin to notice the new grafts in 3 to 6 months. They may not be all at once, but slowly over time. The average hair grows 1 cm to 1/2 inches per month. Be patient. Some hair transplant patients may need to wait 8-12 months.

Q What causes hair loss in general?

Male pattern hair loss is typical. Hair follicles with a genetic coding bond to DHT (a hormone which slowly kills hair follicles) weaken hair and cause it to fall out. DHT is not attracted to hair follicles located on the back or lower sides of the heads. DHT-receptive hair can be found on the crown, front, above the temples and top of the scalp depending on genetic code. The donor areas for hair grafts on the sides and back are where DHT is not affected. These grafts can be transplanted to the crown, top, and front of the scalp and retain their resistance against DHT hair loss.

Hair loss can be caused by hormonal changes, medications, diseases (such as diabetes or lupus), and major stressors (surgery, accident, etc.).

DHT hair loss is a problem that affects 2/3 of men. Although there are many miracle shampoos and "solutions" that claim to block DHT, only finasteride (the FDA approved it) and minoxidil (the FDA rejected them all). It is a fantastic product but it doesn't offer the same fast, natural, permanent, and cost-effective results as hair grafts.

Q Will I have a scar and it will look like?

FUE is the preferred method of grafting at MHR Clinic. Our doctor will take the grafts from your back or sides. The donor area should be shaved prior to extraction. You will notice small red spots for up to four days. These will gradually fade over time. FUE is a non-invasive hair transplantation method that does not require scarring or cutting.

Q Will I need more than one procedure?

It will depend on how severe your hair loss is and how many implants you have. The new growth will take approximately 4 months. This is a great time to return to your doctor for further evaluation and to determine if you need more sessions.
