Follicular Unit Extract also known as Follicular Unit Removal, involves removing follicles from the’safe,’ or permanent, zone at the back and sides.
Use small punches, typically ranging in size from 0.8 to 1.0mm, and remove follicles one at a time.
The follicles can then be trimmed, counted, and sorted under microscopes (the use microscopes in hair-transplant surgery causes less damage to the hair follicles). They are ready to be placed in tiny incisions in areas of hair loss.
Each graft or follicle may contain 1, 2, or 3 hairs. They will be placed so that you get the best natural results.
Both FUT and FUE recommend that you stay at home the first five days following surgery. This is because the grafts can be particularly fragile.
To get the skin down on the back and sides of your head, i.e. a grade 0 haircut. You can leave the rest of your hair as is. However, in some cases, we may recommend that you trim the top. Some patients prefer to have their hair cut a few months prior to the date of surgery to minimize any style changes when they return to work. We can also cut your hair on the same day.
In the majority of cases, FUE is not an option for long-haired or unshaven patients. It may be possible if only a small number of grafts are needed. FUT surgery is a non-shaven procedure. Many patients choose this method.
FUE can be very difficult for Afro hair because it is curled below the surface. In some cases, we might start with a few grafts to evaluate the yield. Then, we will be able to determine if FUE is an option or whether FUT might be better.
Most cases, new hair will begin to grow within 3-4 months of the procedure. You can see a good aesthetic result 12 months after the procedure and you will see the final result 18 months later. To monitor your progress, follow-up appointments will be held at 6,12 and 18, respectively.
