Follicular Unit Extraction (or simply FUE) is a new method of hair transplant surgery that replaces the outdated follicular units transplantation (or FU). This is a less invasive procedure than FUT, but it requires precision and skill to get the best results.

It leaves less scarring than a FUT (or strip), and produces better results. Clinics around the world have adopted it as their standard method.

What is FUE?

FUE and FUT differ in how the hair is harvested from the donor area. Instead of removing a hair strip, then suturing it together and then dissecting the Follicular Units under a microscope, the FUE method removes the follicular unit from the scalp in groups (called a graft). There is no need to stitch the wound and no microscopes are required.

You can remove the follicular units by placing a 1mm punch around one follicular device and then cutting a small circular through the skin around it. Once the follicular unit has been grasped, it is gently pulled from the connective tissue underneath.

It is done once it is removed. It is now ready to be inserted. It will heal on its own over a period of one to two weeks. The process can be repeated hundreds of time until you get the desired number of foollicular units. Instead of a single, white linear scar, as is the case with traditional follicular units transplantation, patients are left with many 1 mm round scars.

FUE has many advantages

Our clients notice a reduction in scarring and tightening of the scalp. This is because no tissue was grafted or reattached to standard FUT methods.

The recovery time is another advantage. The procedure is not as invasive as FUT and does not require stitches for healing. Recovery is quick, usually within 6-7 days. There are very few scabs around the new follicles. The bleeding is much less than FUT.
